PTA’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Symposium
In Spring of 2016, the PTA hosted a Mental Health and Wellbeing event. Guest speakers from CAMHS and the WHSCT’s Eating Disorder Service and Primary Care Talking Therapy & Well Being Hub shared valuable and very relevant information with our parents regarding issues around mental health in our teenagers.
Representatives from, Daisy, Lifeline, Hurt, Zest and Youthlife, were also present to provide information about the services that are available now for our young people. The evening was rated a huge success by many of the parents and staff who attended. It was indeed a very informative evening. The websites mentioned are now available.

Year 11 attend “Code Showâ€
On Wednesday 19th October five Year 11 students accompanied by their ICT Teacher Miss Butler attended a one day Coding workshop called ”Code Show”. The event, which was hosted by the Bank of Ireland in conjunction with Kainos Software, was held at Catalyst Inc. at the North West Science Park in Derry. The girls learned all about algorithms and were shown how mobile apps are made. They were then given the chance to code some for themselves and by the end of the day each of the girls had coded three fully functional apps. At the end of the workshop each participant was presented with a wireless phone speaker which was a lovely gesture by the organisers. In addition to this Nicole McLaughlin was presented with a prize for writing the best algorithm!
Thanks to the Bank of Ireland and Kainos software for this fantastic opportunity.

Woman of the World Event
The second “Women of the World WOW” event took place in the Playhouse on Friday 30th September. Six Year 12 Technology students accompanied by Mr Molloy attended the event. Following a well- received inaugural event in 2015 the WOW team brought us another tightly packed celebration of all things female with regards to the workplace. WOW Derry is the only WOW event on the Island of Ireland.
Here’s what a few of our girls from Year 12 had to say about the event;
Ellen Mason; “The Women of the World project was very enjoyable and I learned a lot about feminism and other topics through the mentoring and the talks”.
Jodie Maguire; “I enjoyed the project, talking to women working in fields I am interested in gave me ideas for my future – I even got work experience out of it”.
Caitlin Doherty; “This project was very interesting and it was inspiring to hear about different aspects in the field of work”
Amy O’Donnell; “The WOW project was very informative, especially speaking to inspirational women motivated me and gave me ideas about my future”.

Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Programme
Students from Years 8-13 are pictured with Dr M Gormley attending the 'Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Programme' held at Lisneal College recently.
The students received training in relation to the issue of bullying and potential ways of addressing it in schools. The Education Minister Peter Weir visited the workshop and commended all those participating in the training.
The Minister referred to bullying 'taking many forms' and that 'bullying has no place in our schools or society'. The students will now work as a team of Anti-Bullying Ambassadors in school.
