Visit of Pope Francis to Ireland / Papal Mass
On Sunday 26th August we, the staff and pupils of Lumen Christi, had the unforgettable experience of celebrating mass with our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Together 32 of us embarked on the long journey to Dublin, sleepily unprepared for what the day truly had instore. At the early start of 6:30am the dark, grey morning was enough to dampen the atmosphere, but our tiredness was soon washed away with a hot cup of tea and a salty bacon bap at the warm and welcoming Kelly’s Inn.
Contentedly, we set off again, spirits high in the wait for Pope Francis. Finally, Dublin’s docks greeted us, we were almost there, or so we thought. We had remained somewhat oblivious to the hour of walking that loomed over us. Through Dublin’s city streets we trekked, marching past shops and cathedrals, factories and arenas until there in front of us stood the iconic, iron gates of Phoenix Park. Soon, we were seated in front of the altar, overexcited in the midst of such an extraordinary experience. Then came the arrival, the Pope Mobile glided through the crowd right in front of our very eyes. Graciously, our Holy Father made his way to the altar, inspiring the 300,000 people there who clung to his every word. Together we prayed, thankful for the breath-taking experience that was presented before us and captivated by the wisdom and compassion of Pope Francis. Motivated, we made our way back to the coach.
We lazily climbed into our seats, preparing for the lengthy journey back to Derry but we remained ever so appreciative for our family, our friends and our faith.
