E-Safety Workshop by Wayne Denner
Dear Parent/Carer
In an era where on-line communication is commonplace, many of our young people are at risk due to lack of awareness of the dangers associated with inappropriate use of the Internet.
In order to enable you to support your child to navigate the digital world safely, the college, in collaboration with the PTA, is offering a free E-safety workshop for parents/carers on Wednesday 18th November 7.00 – 8.30pm.
Please read the E-safety workshop by Wayne Denner for further details.
Year 8 Learning To Learn Workshop.
On Wednesday 18th November, our team of Year 13 Class Counsellors delivered a ‘Learning to Learn’ workshop to Year 8 students. The aim of the workshop was to provide our Year 8 pupils with helpful advice and guidance for their upcoming December exams. In addition to receiving a ‘study skills’ booklet featuring a comprehensive revision guide for each subject, the Class Counsellors shared the best methods to revise at home and how best to avoid exam nerves. We would ask parents of Year 8 students to have a look at the revision notebook as it will be an invaluable tool for helping each pupil prepare sufficiently for the exams. Students were provided with a copy of their December exam timetable on Friday 20th November.

Year 10 Participate in Technology and Design Competition
On Friday the 6th of November, eight Year 10 students travelled to St. Mary’s Limavady to take on the best in the Northwest in a regional Technology and Design Competition sponsored by the Rotary Club. The Competition which is now in its 4th year involves teams of students in the design of a mechanical buggy.
The event began with an hour of design work which the Lumen Christi pupils responded to with gusto. The sketching and mathematic dimensioning skills were clearly evident. The pupils then had 2 hours to manufacture their proposed prototype. In the final element of the competition pupils got the opportunity to test their vehicles.
Lumen Christi pupils were highly commended by a senior University of Ulster Lecturer for their design work throughout the process. The Technology and Design Department were delighted with the dedication of our pupils on the day.
Amazing Brains – Year 9 Study Skills
All Year 9 pupils participated in a Study Skills workshop facilitated by Amazing Brains. The workshop encouraged the students to reflect on their progress, set achievable targets and to plan ahead. The ideas discussed will be particularly useful in terms of their preparation for forthcoming examinations. The students worked together in teams and all thoroughly enjoyed the workshop.
Operation Christmas Child
Over 300 shoeboxes have been collected by the college as part of Operation Christmas Child. Each shoebox contains gifts for either young children or teenagers and items included stationery, games, gloves and sweets. Sharon Jack from Samaritan’s Purse was delighted with the donation and has assured us that the shoeboxes will be forwarded to those in need this Christmas. We extend a sincere thank you to all students, parents/carers and staff for their generous support of this important charity drive.
