Ward Cup Final - Tuesday 28th March 2017 Lumen Christi v De La Salle Downpatrick
Match Report:
Lumen Christi Derry 3-10 De La Salle Downpatrick 1-8
Despite losing a player to a straight red card just before the break, Derry city’s Lumen Christi convincingly collected the Danske Bank Ward Cup at Ballymena yesterday afternoon.
Lumen were ahead by 2-5 to 0-4 at the turnover and opened the second half scoring when Oran Duffy fired in their third goal in the 34th minute.
That score effectively closed the door on the Downpatrick challenge despite the best efforts of Colin Lecky, Taylor Louden and Player of the Match Conor Logue in goals who brought off a number of stunning saves particularly during the opening half.
Those first 30 minutes saw end to end attacking, with both sides creating good openings but the East Down side in particular most wsteful although Louden opened the scoring in the third minute.
By the end of the first quarter, Niall Moore’s goal and points from Ben McCarron, David McGurk and Moore had Lumen Christi 1-3 to 0-1 ahead.
Louden and Lecky closed the gap to a goal before the Derry side hit another purple patch with McCarron’s 27th minute goal sandwiched between two pointed frees from David McGurk.
After Duffy’s goal, Lumen tagged on a few points before a goal from substitute Declan Burns with his first touch sparked a mini revival from De La Salle, with Corey Mahon, Colin Lecky and James Mahoney all pointing in quick succession.
However 14 man Lumen never looked like losing their grip on proceedings and McGurk split the posts to complete the scoring with his fourth point.
The Derry side performed very well on the day with Dermot Baker and Luke McCarron shoring up defence. Cathal Roarty was on top in the middle, while Moore was always a threat up front with substitute Eoghan Bradley winning a lot of ball during the second half.

Lumen Christi Netball Teams “SHINE†at the Northern Ireland Schools Finals
We had two Netball teams through to Northern Ireland Finals on Wednesday 22nd March in Lisburn Racquet’s Centre.
The Junior team captained by Orla McGeough, played an excellent game of netball. They were composed and calm throughout a very close encounter with Aquinas, Belfast.
The girls lost by a narrow 2 goals but were true champions in the way they played the game. The team should be so proud of their achievement and they will build on this experience for next year. Big CONGRATULATIONS to our very talented Orla McGeough, who pick up “Player of the Match”.
The Intermediate team captained by Eimer Stewart were victorious over St Paul’s, Bessbrook. This team played a fantastic game of netball and proved that they have a lot of talent and strength. The girls showed excellent determination coming back from 5 goals down in the first quarter. A draw when the final whistle was blown saw the girls dig deep in extra time to bring home the title with a win of 31-28. They are a true credit to themselves and the school. Big CONGRATULATIONS to our very talented Emily Sweeney, who pick up “Player of the Match”.
Year 11 Learning for Life and Work Workshop
On Monday 20th March all Year 11 pupils took part in a Digital Masterclass delivered by YENI (Young Enterprise Northern Ireland) as part of their LLW programme of study. Pupils were invited to come up with an innovative app to use in everyday life. Within their teams pupils had to assign roles within marketing, finance and sales. They had to present their pitches to a panel of judges which included a representative from Allstate, a local software development company and a guest speaker from the Intelligence Systems Research Centre of the UU. The panel assessed teams on the uniqueness of the app and the delivery of the pitch. The panel was hugely impressed with the range of app designs and commented that some of them would be viable in today’s market. The ideas included a “SimplyFit” app which provided ideal running routes based on current weather conditions, “Ofla”, an app which stores your clothes size, shoe size, favourite clothes brands and suggests matching items and the winning app, “Drinkr” which helps users track the amount of units of alcohol consumed and tests awareness reactions and attention span. The added breathalyser can track the alcohol unit intake and send a full breakdown to your phone via Bluetooth.
The guest speaker from the Intelligence Systems Research Centre of the UU gave pupils an insight into the array of career opportunities available within the digital world and the innovative work taking place within the ISRC of the UU. Exciting prospects for students and encouraging that pioneering work within the digital world is taking place on our doorstep!
Pupils were fully engaged in all activities and thoroughly enjoyed the workshop.

Fintan Stewart crowned King of Ireland at the All-Ireland Schools Cross Country Champion
Fintan Stewart Year 14 has achieved something that most young athletes can only dream of - a few weeks ago he was crowned Ulster Champion and on Saturday 11th March in Mallusk he claimed gold in the Senior Boys 6500m race to be crowned All-Ireland Cross Country Schools Champion. Fintan ran a very smart, tactical race and was in control throughout. This is a thoroughly deserved title for him, he has worked so hard for a number of years now and this has paid off. The school and PE department are extremely proud of you Fintan.
Luke McCarron also competed in the Senior Boys race. He ran a very determined race throughout to finish in the top 40. Also an excellent achievement.

Oonagh Payne ran in the Minor Girls race. She took a few tumbles in the race but showed fantastic character and strength to finish in the top 50. We look forward to seeing Oonagh progress in next few years also.

Lumen Christi StemQuest 2017 Champions
On Monday 20th February two teams from the college travelled to the Titanic Building in Belfast to compete in the finals of the Northern Ireland StemQuest Quiz.
To qualify for the finals a series of regional heats were held in January throughout Northern Ireland. One of our teams won the event and secured an automatic place in the finals and our other team were confirmed later as best runners up and hence secured their place.
The day of the finals was broken up into two parts. The first part of the day saw the eight finalist teams compete in a table quiz format with BBC’s Barra Best acting as quiz master. At the end of this stage, four teams were eliminated. Both of our teams made it into the top four and progressed to the head-to-head stage along with teams from Friends School, Lisburn and Ballymena Academy.
Fortunately our teams were kept separate in the first round of head-to-heads and both won those contests, showing excellent knowledge and composure. As a result an all-Lumen final was on the cards as our students faced off against each other for the title of best STEM team.
After 40 buzz in questions only one point separated the teams in the end and the team of Harvey Ward-Gallagher, Yuqi Cao, Aditya Shah and James Douglas emerged as champions. An interesting reversal in fortune as they were the team that qualified as runners-up in the regional heats! Our simultaneous congratulations and commiserations went to Edmond Lee, Samuel Prendergast, Patrick Gormley and Chinmaya Panchapagesan for a wonderful display of knowledge and teamwork throughout the competition.

The Classical Association in Northern Ireland Latin Club Lecture
Drs Peter Crawford and John Curran from the Belfast branch of the Classical Association visited the College on the 24th February to deliver a talk to KS3 pupils entitled “20 Things Every Latin Student Should Know About Rome”.
This was a fascinating and engrossing talk that addressed a wide range of topics including the History of Rome and the spread of Roman Civilisation, the development and etymology of the English language, and the parallels between the power structures of the Emperors of Rome and the Royal families of Europe.
Bringing the talk up to date and relevant to his audience Dr Crawford also explained the Latin involved in the magical spells used in the Harry Potter stories, and the wide spread use of Latin names in the “Hunger Games” series.
The pupils who attended all enjoyed the talk and we look forward to the next visit.
