Stock Market Challenge 2013 Year 11 Global Investor competition

On 25th January Mr. Ryan accompanied 10 of our budding stock brokers from Year 11 to this year's North West Stock Market Challenge organised by Young Enterprise NI at St. Mary's College, Derry.

Our students were required to work in teams to increase the value of a starting fund by buying and selling shares in 12 companies and 3 commodities, basing their decisions on news stories broadcast whilst the game was in play.

Shea Nicell and Jonathan Gardiner won a trip for their class to a trading room workshop at the School of Management, Queen's University and Carol-Ann McConnellogue won a prize for her report on the ethical trading that took place.

Congratulations to all the students and organisers involved for an enjoyable day.

Year 13 Chemistry Students Have the Winning Formula

On Saturday 9th March Aoife Carson, Claire Bradley & Paul O'Donnell competed in the regional final of the Royal Society of Chemistry Analytical Chemistry Competition in Stranmillis College and came a very close second winning £400 for the Chemistry Department! This is a very prestigious competition in which we have been placed every year for the past five years and indeed have won on two occasions.  We are delighted that this year's team have also done us proud.  Well Done!

Camerata Ireland Workshop

Our senior orchestra students took part in a workshop featuring four professional string players from the esteemed Camerate Ireland Orchestra.  We had the opportunity to listen to range of instrumental music from a variety of eras and styles, and to interact with the players on an informal level.  We particularly enjoyed learning about the music of composers that we study from our A-level syllabus such as Bartok and Stravinsky. A relaxing but informative experience was had by all!

"An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day"

Friday 1st March was Lumen Christi's Walk to School Day.  The rain clouds stayed away, as many of our staff and pupils participated in the event.  Not only did the walk enable them to fulfil part of the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day, it also gave them the opportunity to take in the beautiful sights along the City's walls!
