Year 11 Students attend the 49th Annual BT Young Scientist Competition 9th - 12th January 2013
The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition is a prestigious nationwide competition. Students from throughout Ireland are given the opportunity to submit Science and Technology based projects for exhibition in the RDS in Dublin. Over 3000 entries from across Ireland were submitted to the judging panel in the first round of the competition this year. This was then reduced to a final group of 550 entries.
This was the first time that our Science Club members had entered this competition and two student projects were selected for the final list of entries chosen to showcase at the event.
Well done to Lauren mc Laughlin who impressed with her project on ‘Swimming Pool Chemistry' and to Vanessa Hutton and Jenny Gray who were highly commended for their project ‘Catechol Oxidase in Potato Extract'. As well as the 550 student projects on display, there were four exhibition halls filled with exciting and innovative science and technology based exhibits and entertainment, making it a thrilling event for our students.
All three students were a credit to their school and have sown the seeds of interest for other Science Club members to submit entries next year.
Celebrations of the Gasyard
The Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum won the ‘Best Health Project' in the National Lottery Good Causes Awards in 2012. In December, Lumen Christi College, who are part of the Extended Schools Cluster group, and have benefited from accessing the BBHF facilities, were invited to attend a celebration at the Gasyard.
A group of Year 13 students, accompanied by Mrs Anne McKeever and Miss Amanda King went to the function. They were treated to lunch and a bit of entertainment by local comedian, Noel McBride.
