Lourdes Pilgrimage June 2014
When I first heard about the pilgrimage to Lourdes, I was unsure and thought that a better school trip could be coming up. However, I couldn’t have been more wrong! Before we embarked on our journey, we met as a group and got to know each other better through icebreakers and discussions about the itinerary. We also learnt about the history of Lourdes as a place of pilgrimage, where Our Lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirious many times. We were invited to the School Chapel with our parents to attend Mass and to get all the final details of the pilgrimage.
In the early hours of Thursday 26th June 2014 we began our pilgrimage. The highlights for me included taking part in the torchlight procession which began at the Prairy and ended in the square in front of the Rosary Basilica and taking part through prayer and song during Mass at the Grotto of Our Lady. In our spare time we were able to explore the town, eat delicious ice cream and catch up with our friends.
On the third day, we travelled up the mountain side to Pont d’Espagne. Words cannot describe how amazing the scenery was. It was the perfect setting to take part in a Mass where I felt we were most definitely in God’s presence.
I was very fortunate to visit Lourdes with my friends and in full health. Seeing other pilgrims with many serious illnesses and poor health made me appreciate all my blessings. It was amazing to witness the faith that was present with all the suffering these people had to go through.
Memories of the pilgrimage to Lourdes will stay with me for the rest of my life. I made many new friends and I still find myself singing the hymns that we sang. Whenever I see my Lourdes medal around my neck, it reminds me of this very special experience.
